I have used mine over a home network, controlling things from a laptop in another room. For this reason, many amateurs build their own receivers or modify commercial ones.
The Icom software will be no help with this though, you will need some third party software and work out a way to send the audio from the receiver over the network. Using the Softaare on shortwave with an external antenna you are likely to need to use the attenuator button quite a lot!
Softwar, it is not so good for receiving signals from space, where sources radiate radio waves across a wide range of frequencies and wider band reception collects more signal and increases sensitivity. It is like any other communications receiver or transceiver which can be controlled via a PC. The difference is you must use a PC to control this receiver.
